Some folks might think this is the ultimate denigration of a mill vise, but the addition of a drilled and tapped hole on the stationary jaw side allows for a stud and strap clamp to provide extra down-holding force for unusual shapes.
In this instance, the miter gage casting was not holding flat in the vise. The extra downward push from the tapped stud/strap clamp allowed me to use the vise. Having to remove the vise to clamp the part on the table was unnecessary for the simple little job of milling the top edge of the miter gage.
The vise isn’t the perfect tool for every work-holding task, but this little modification does increase the range of work that can be held.
