I have yet another method to align the tailstock with the headstock. I have used this method for years and have found it to be quicker and more accurate than the usual center-to-center method.

All that is needed is two pieces of drill rod; 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch diameter works well. Simply face at least one end of both pieces. Make sure that you have no burrs around the edge and be careful not to round the edge when de-burring.

Now, load one piece in the headstock chuck or collet and the other in the tailstock chuck. Make sure your chucks have minimum runout! Carefully bring them together until they touch. By looking down on the connection between the two, misalignment in any plane is clearly visible. Also, by running your finger over the joint, even a very small misalignment can easily be felt.

Alignment Method

This method is quick and cheap, and a lot more accurate than it sounds. Try it, you’ll like it…
