There are low-cost carbide router bits available, frequently found on sale at your local tool supplier, which can be used on your vertical mill to save you dollars, as well as setup time. V-grooves, edge chamfers, and rounded edges are just some examples of milling operations that I have done using these economical alternatives to expensive end mills.
You’ll find that you may have to reduce your depth of cut or feeds a bit, but I think you will be happy with the results. One word of caution, the angles and form of some of these cutters may not be precise enough for your uses, so make sure to first make a test cut when trying out a new cutter.
