Here is a tip for a workholding option that I often use with odd-shaped parts. While not as solid as clamping with straps or other more conventional methods, this can be used for a number of situations.
As seen in the Photo, I have clamped the part in a machinist’s clamp, and then clamped the setup in my machine vise. For the simple drill and countersink operation needed, the clamp proved adequate for holding and significantly speeded things up.
Of course, care must be taken when clamping work as shown. Proper drill point selection and careful feed practice helps to prevent rapid advance through the work and lifting of the work onto the drill. Loose spindles (especially on drill motors) are often the worst offenders.
